Rest for Reyes in Mets’ master plan

Terry Collins hopes to have Jose Reyes back by Monday from his strained left hamstring, and he wants the Mets shortstop to get used to a new schedule.

“Would extra rest help? Perhaps,” the manager said of Reyes’ fragile legs. “That’s going to be the next step in taking a look at his injuries: Try to give him some days off. Whether that helps, only time will tell.”

Asked if that meant giving him one game off a week, Collins said: “That’s possible.”

There is, though, the distinct possibility Collins will have no say in the matter after this season, since Reyes may not be in New York.

“Next summer, I think he’s going to be here,” Collins said of Reyes, who went 1-for-3 with a homer in seven innings in a rehab game for Double-A Binghamton last night. He is scheduled to play a full game there today.

“I told him we’re going to have arguments and have discussions, because [he’s] going to want to play.”

And if it’s up to Collins, it won’t be a long conversation: “I just told him, ‘Next year, we’re going to do this.’ “

Jason Bay was scratched from last night’s lineup with a jammed right shoulder. He hurt it trying to make a diving catch in Philadelphia on Tuesday. An MRI exam showed no damage and Bay expects to play Monday.

“It was pretty sore during that day game [Wednesday] and I thought the off day would help, but it was still just as sore [yesterday],” Bay said.

Both games scheduled for this weekend against the Braves will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader Sept. 8, starting at 4:10 p.m. Tickets for today’s game will be honored for both of those games. Sunday’s tickets will be handled under the Mets’ rain check policy.

Collins said R.A. Dickey and Dillon Gee would start Monday’s doubleheader against the Marlins, followed by Mike Pelfrey Tuesday, Chris Capuano Wednesday and then either D.J. Carrasco or Miguel Batista — called up from Triple-A Buffalo yesterday –as a spot starter on Thursday.

Batista, 40, was brought up after Scott Hairston was placed on the DL with a left oblique strain, retroactive to Aug. 24.

The Mets signed Batista July 4 after he was released by St. Louis. He appeared in 10 games — including eight starts — for Buffalo, going 3-0 with a 4.24 ERA.
