These cats look pissed.
Meet feline fashionistas Princess Prin and Kotara, a.k.a. “Japan’s most beloved supermodels,” outfitted in curly wigs, giraffe hats, and poodle ears in Vice Magazine’s new picture book “Fashion Cats.”
The kitties belong to Japanese “cat tailor” Takako Iwasa, who makes upwards of 22 prototypes before getting an outfit just right. But the best part is the looks on the cats’ faces.
“They look so serious and unhappy — it’s as if they’re trained professional models,” says Ellis Jones, the book’s co-editor. “I mean, who doesn’t want to see a cat dressed up like a frog?”
Cats seem to be having a moment. There’s the Japanese box-jumping cat and web sensation named Maru — who now has book deal — the Internet meme “keyboard cat,” with 18 million hits on YouTube, and, of course, the whole LOLcats phenomenon.
But cat tailor Iwasa is ahead of the game, selling clothes for cats on her website since 2000. She hand-stitches everything, with some ensembles taking upwards of 6 months to complete.
She gets the strangest requests from men, who often ask her to make matching outfits (she declines). Then again, she’s pretty strange herself, and even quotes the cats directly in the book.
“I’ll wear it if you want me to though,” Iwasa quotes Princess Prin as saying about her Princess Marianne outfit. “I’m a pro, you know.”
