Bloomberg: Now it’s too late to flee

Mayor Bloomberg late last night told New Yorkers who had failed to heed his warning to leave low-lying areas that it’s now better to just hunker down.

“The time for evacuation is over,” a tired-sounding Bloomberg said at a press conference at the Office of Emergency Management’s headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn.

“Everyone should go inside and prepare to stay indoors until the weather conditions improve. Now, we have to deal with what comes from Mother Nature.”

Hizzoner gave advice on how to best weather the hurricane, such as staying in rooms with as few windows as possible to avoid possible glass debris.

Bloomberg also called out two men who were kayaking off Staten Island at around 7 p.m. and had to be rescued by the NYPD when they capsized.

“The NYPD Harbor Officers had to put their lives on the line to save these people,” he said, adding that they were issued summonses after being pulled to safety.

“Please exercise good judgment,” Bloomberg pleaded.

“You’re putting your own lives in danger and putting the lives of the first responders in danger.”
