Jets FB Conner sits out practice, plans to play in opener

Jets fullback John Conner did not practice yesterday, but he and coach Rex Ryan said he will play Sunday against the Cowboys.

Conner sprained his right ankle on Aug. 29 in the preseason game against the Giants. He said he ran for the first time yesterday and the season opener is not a question for him.

Ryan echoed that feeling.

“There’s no doubt. I think he will play,” Ryan said. “I really feel strongly that he will play. Keep him out of practice [today], regular schedule [tomorrow].”

Conner was a rookie sensation last year, featured on “Hard Knocks” and known as “The Terminator.” This year he takes over the starting fullback role with veteran Tony Richardson gone.

The Jets do not have another fullback on their roster. Ryan said tight end Matthew Mulligan could work in at fullback if needed.

Offensive lineman Rob Turner was in the locker room yesterday, getting around on a motorized cart. Turner broke his right leg in the preseason opener against the Texans on Aug. 15. He said he is not sure when he will be back. He is expected to be out for about two more months.

“It’s just a matter of how fast my leg responds to what they give,” Turner said. “They’re not going to rush me back on the field, but when [my leg’s] ready, I’ll be back and ready to go.”

Turner described the injury, which occurred when Texans defensive end J.J. Watt rolled up on his leg.

“I felt it pop when I got rolled up on, but I took two steps and I actually felt the bone shift in my leg, and that’s when I sat down and tapped my helmet, because I knew something was broken,” Turner said.

CB Darrelle Revis (right hip), NT Sione Pouha (left knee) QB Mark Brunell (right calf) and NT Kenrick Ellis (left hamstring) were all limited in practice yesterday. Ryan said none of the injuries is too serious.
