Manny Ramirez charged with battery after ‘domestic dispute’

WESTON, Florida — Former World Series MVP Manny Ramirez was in custody Monday night, charged with battery following a domestic incident at his Florida home.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Ramirez, 39, was arrested at his Weston, south Florida, home “on one charge of touch/strike battery stemming from a domestic dispute at the residence.”

He was arrested at 7:00pm and was still being held in jail as of 9:30pm, FOX Sports reported.

Celebrity news website TMZ quoted witnesses as saying the Dominican-born former outfielder was removed from his home, northwest of Miami, in handcuffs.

His wife, Juliana, reportedly left the house shortly afterwards and departed the scene in a police car.

Ramirez retired from baseball earlier this year, leaving the Tampa Bay Rays, following a second positive test for performance-enhancing drugs.

His use of banned substances, which came to light late in his career, has called into question achievements that would have otherwise resulted in election to the Baseball Hall of Fame, according to FOX Sports.

Ramirez was the 2004 World Series MVP, when his then-team the Boston Red Sox won their first title since 1918. He made 12 All-Star teams, and hit 555 home runs in a 19-year career.
