Manny released, ordered to stay away from wife following arrest: report

WESTON, Fla. — Former All-Star slugger Manny Ramirez was released from a south Florida jail Tuesday after posting a $2,500 bond following his arrest for allegedly hitting his wife during a domestic dispute.

Judge John Hurley ordered Ramirez to stay away from his wife after the 39-year-old was charged with domestic battery.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Ramirez was arrested Monday at his Weston, Florida, home and taken into custody “on one charge of touch/strike battery stemming from a domestic dispute at the residence.”

His wife, Juliana Ramirez, had called the police, telling officers the former Red Sox star struck her with an open hand on the couple’s bed, causing her to hit her head on the headboard, according to the police report.

The report said she showed injuries consistent with her story.

Ramirez was released from a Florida jail today after posting $2,500 bond. He was swarmed by reporters on his way out — but the former slugger refused to answer any questions, saying, “It’s none of your business.”

At one point before Ramirez drove off, he threw reporters’ microphones out of his car window, TMZ.com reported.

Ramirez was booked into the jail shortly before 9 p.m. Monday and was held overnight.

TMZ quoted witnesses as saying the Dominican-born former outfielder was removed from his home, northwest of Miami, in handcuffs.

His wife reportedly left the house shortly afterwards and departed the scene in a police car.

Ramirez retired from baseball earlier this year, leaving the Tampa Bay Rays, following a second positive test for performance-enhancing drugs.

His use of banned substances, which came to light late in his career, has called into question his Hall of Fame-caliber statistics.

Ramirez was the 2004 World Series MVP after helping the Boston Red Sox to their first title since 1918. He made 12 All-Star teams, and hit 555 home runs in a 19-year career.
