Strawberry says Reyes should stay with Mets

Darryl Strawberry claims he is no role model when it comes to free agency.

The former slugger yesterday said he goofed when he left the Mets more than two decades ago, and hopes Jose Reyes doesn’t follow his path.

“If I had to do it all over again, I would have stayed,” Strawberry said before the Mets swept the Phillies, 2-1 and 6-3, in yesterday’s day-night doubleheader. “It looks good on the other side, but it’s not always as good as the place that you are used to. When you are young, you don’t realize that. For me, I was young and I didn’t realize what New York meant to me.

“Tell Jose I said that New York is a great place — I mean a great place, no matter what. What you have to go through, how difficult it gets, this is the place where you want to play.”

Reyes, who is unsigned beyond these final four games, reiterated he doesn’t want to leave Mets. But he says he won’t gauge the situation until meeting with his agent, Peter Greenberg, shortly after the season concludes.

“Everything is a consideration, and being here in New York means a lot for me,” Reyes said. “I don’t want to leave here, I want to stay here. For now I just want to finish the games we have strong and see what happens.”

Strawberry, a homegrown star who signed a five-year contract worth $20.3 million to play for his hometown Dodgers following the 1990 season, was 28 years old when he left the Mets. Reyes turned 28 in June.

“I was just personally fed up with management,” Strawberry said. “It never had anything to do with the media or fans or playing in New York. Sometimes that happens. You’re young and you’re stupid, too. You make stupid decisions and you realize that.

“You don’t know that when you’re young, but when you look back over it you realize, ‘That was so stupid. I was so young, what was I thinking about, leaving New York City to go to L.A. or anywhere?’ This is the greatest place to play, the greatest fans.

“Are the expectations high? Is the media tough? That is part of it. You just have to learn to live with that.”

Strawberry was asked if that means Reyes should accept an offer below market value to remain with the Mets.

“I’m not getting into that — I did not say that,” Strawberry said. “I have nothing to do with that, all I can say is I would love to see him stay in New York.

“New York loves him and Mets fans love him, all the players love him, we love the way he plays. Fans deeply care about him. You look around and you see a lot of people wearing No. 7. That speaks for itself.

“You would hope that something good would work out for both sides, because he’s a real exciting player. You’re not going to find too many players in the game that are more exciting than him. It’s a tough situation to be in.”
