Amish take NYC

What happens when five Amish people forgo their horse-and-buggies for Manhattan’s taxis and subways?

You’ll find out on “Breaking Amish,” an upcoming TLC reality show in which five Mennonites from Pennsylvania and Ohio drop their cultural baggage and move to Manhattan.

“The idea of the show is to allow them the opportunity to go out and experience a lifestyle that’s completely different from theirs,” says TLC General Manager Amy Winter.

“Breaking Amish” will begin filming early next month in Pennsylvania and Ohio, with the five people moving into hotels once they arrive in Manhattan to mix with the “English” (the Amish term for outsiders).

“From there, it’s up to them to make their own decisions on what to do next,” says Winter. “Several of them have expressed the desire to pursue employment and career dreams they’ve had — and I’m sure . . . some of them will look for apartments. They’ll change their appearance to dress like ‘English.’ ”

The series will premiere later this year.
