Zoo makes ‘sex tape’ of Scottish giant pandas

EDINBURGH — Britain’s giant pandas, Yang Guang (Sunshine) and Tian Tian (Sweetie), were filmed as they finally got in the mood for love.

Their moves could go down even better than the notorious celebrity sex tapes made by the likes of Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton.

But Sunshine will have to raise his game. He mounted Sweetie five times as they met in the same cage for the first time — but failed to actually mate.

Edinburgh Zoo, which hopes babies will result from the trysts, said, “Both seemed very keen and receptive. She was extremely interested and showing all the right signs. She was calling out to him in a high-pitched sound.”

Keeper Alison Maclean, a vet, a zoologist and a Chinese panda expert watched anxiously as a “love tunnel” was opened, connecting adjoining cages in which the bears have lived for five months.

The zoo said, “Sweetie was rubbing against the sides of the love tunnel before it opened. As soon as they were introduced, they had a bit of ‘wrestling.'”

The panda cam was switched off during the sessions Tuesday — but zoo bosses did make a “sex tape.”

Staff separated the eight-year-olds when “the atmosphere changed” after a few minutes.

There are fears 196-pound (89-kilogram) Sweetie and 280-pound (127-kilogram) Sunshine could hurt each other in a tiff.

Female pandas are fertile for only one 36-hour period each year. Another attempt at mating was being made Wednesday — and if that fails, in vitro fertilization will be tried next year.
