The Nets addressed a dire need for frontcourt depth Friday when they signed forward Dennis Horner to a 10-day contract before beginning a four-game West Coast swing with a 102-100 victory over Golden State.
Horner was called up from the Nets’ D-League affiliate, the Springfield Armor, after Shelden Williams and Jordan Williams were injured during Wednesday’s win over the Pacers at Prudential Center.
Shelden Williams — who had been the lone Net to play in the first 52 games of the season — left Wednesday’s game after getting poked in the right eye, and did not make the trip with the team to the West Coast. Jordan Williams did make the trip after suffering a concussion against the Pacers, but was not expected to play last night.
Those injuries, along with the ongoing absence of center Brook Lopez, left the Nets with just Johan Petro and Kris Humphries as available big men for last night’s game before Horner’s signing, though small forward Gerald Wallace could spend some time at power forward.
Horner, who averaged 17 points and 8.5 rebounds in 25 games with the Armor, made the Nets roster out of training camp and appeared in five gamesbefore he was released to make room for small forward Larry Owens in January.
Guard Anthony Morrow — who missed the past two games with a sore right shoulder — returned to the lineup and scored a point in 11 minutes. The Nets used 10 players.
