Carter to be honored at Mets opener

The Mets will open the 2012 season by celebrating a piece of their past.

Gary Carter, the catcher for the 1986 World Series champions, will be honored before today’s opener against the Braves.

Carter died of brain cancer Feb. 16. He was 57.

His widow Sandy and other members of his family will participate in the ceremony, including throwing out the first pitch.

There also will be a moment of silence.

Representatives of each branch of the armed forces will sing the national anthem. Former “American Idol” contestant Heejun Han will sing “God Bless America.”
