Gingrich would rally behind Romney if he won Republican nomination

WASHINGTON — Newt Gingrich said Sunday he would rally behind Republican rival Mitt Romney if he won the presidential nomination.

The former House Speaker told “FOX News Sunday” that his campaign was “operating on a shoestring,” and acknowledged the former Massachusetts governor was more likely to win the nomination race.

He said his campaign was using “a little bit” of his own personal funds to stay afloat but supporters were urging him to stay in the race.

“No, we’re not going to go broke. I do think there’s a desire for a more idea-oriented Republican Party,” he continued.

Gingrich said that if Romney wins 1,144 delegates and clinches the nomination, he would do “everything I can” to support him going into November.

“We are absolutely committed to defeating Barack Obama,” he said. “I will work as hard for [Romney] as I would for myself.”
