Health officials are investigating a possible case of bacterial meningitis at a suburban New York college after a student was hospitalized with possible symptoms of the severe disease.
Westchester County Health Department spokeswoman Heather McGill told the Journal News that they won’t be able to confirm whether the Berkeley College student has bacterial meningitis for several days.
The college that has a campus in Westchester County issued a statement saying it was working to identify any “close contacts” of the person who was potentially infected with the disease.
Symptoms of bacterial meningitis include high fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck and a rash. The disease can be fatal or cause permanent brain damage. It can be treated with antibiotics.
