ATM

Another gimmicky, low-budget thriller from Chris Sparling, the writer who did the Ryan Reynolds flick “Buried,” “ATM” takes place mostly inside a . . . you guessed it. After a Christmas party, three colleagues (Brian Geraghty from “The Hurt Locker,” Josh Peck and Alice Eve) from a financial firm stop at an isolated ATM in the middle of a parking lot, where they are promptly menaced by a parka-clad thug who kills passers-by outside and won’t let them leave. Meanwhile, the temperature drops below zero, they parked their car really far away (for no good reason) and no one has a phone. What to do?

Not much about the movie makes sense, though there are occasional schlocky thrills. It’s hard to get past the feeling that you’re locked in an enclosed space with a screenwriter struggling to come up with increasingly far-fetched happenings. Maybe DVDs of “Buried” and “ATM” will be sold in the same package someday. You could call it a trapped-in-a-box set.
