Kelly running for mayor is news to me: Mike

If Ray Kelly is making plans to run for mayor in 2013, he hasn’t told his boss, Mayor Bloomberg.

“I expect him to be with me through [the end of] the administration,” the mayor said yesterday. “I’ve never had a conversation with Ray about running for office. I think there’s no question Ray Kelly has done a phenomenal job for this city.”

Republican leaders eager to block the Democrats from retaking City Hall in 2014 are wooing the police commissioner to become their candidate.

He’s given no public sign that he’s eager to take up the offer.

Steve Spinola, president of the Real Estate Board of New York, said Kelly appeared before his board of governors two weeks ago and denied he would be a candidate if asked.

GOP officials led by former Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari will get one more stab at it next month, when Kelly joins them for lunch.

Molinari, a Kelly supporter for more than two decades, tried to convince former Mayor Rudy Giuliani to retain the top cop when Giuliani took office in 1993.

Molinari recalled that Giuliani had a secret meeting with Kelly and emerged “impressed.” But Giuliani ended up offering the job to Bill Bratton.
