Rep. Towns calls it quits

Brooklyn Democratic Rep. Edolphus Towns will retire after 30 years in Congress, Fox News reported last night.

Partly because of redrawn district lines, Towns, 77, would have faced a bitter primary fight against two Democratic challengers, Councilman Charles Barron and Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries.

Last month, another city Democrat, Rep. Gary Ackerman of Queens, said he was stepping down.
