Bloomberg, Romney meet for first time over breakfast

Mayor Bloomberg had his first face-to-face meeting today with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The two had breakfast at the headquarters of the mayor’s philanthropic foundation on East 78th Street — a week after Sen. John McCain visited Bloomberg at City Hall to try to convince him to support Romney.

The meeting was kept hidden from the public and didn’t appear on Bloomberg’s schedule.

Some of the mayor’s friends in the business world are also promoting the former Massachusetts governor, who isn’t on the same page on at least two key issues dear to Bloomberg.

The mayor is such a big supporter of Planned Parenthood that he recently donated $250,000 from his own pocket to the organization when it was under attack.

In March, Romney said he’d “get rid” of Planned Parenthood if he became President.

“Of course you get rid of Obamacare,” Romney was quoted as saying. “That’s the east one. But there are others. Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that.”

Romney also recently spoke before the National Rifle Association, which is at war with Bloomberg over toughening gun control laws.

Last week, Bloomberg secretly traveled to Washington to play golf with Vice President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who courted the mayor to back President Obama instead of Romney.

Last year, Bloomberg criticized Obama for failing”to provide leadership in difficult situations” during a major budget dispute.
