CHSAA baseball roundup: McCarthy provides relief for Iona in extra-inning win over Fordham

Tim McCarthy has found a new role: lockdown reliever.

The Temple-bound right-hander pitched 4-1/3 scoreless innings on his bullpen day to lead Iona Prep to a wild, 9-6 win in nine innings over rival Fordham Prep in CHSAA Bronx/Westchester ‘AA’ baseball Tuesday in The Bronx.

McCarthy came into the game in the fifth and was nearly flawless, striking out four. Pat Decea hit the go-ahead home run in the ninth for Iona (8-5), which creeps within two games in the loss column of first-place Fordham (8-3).

Nic Figari relieved starter Matt D’Ariano in the first inning and pitched the next two innings, giving up just one unearned run. Dalton gave up one run in 1-2/3 innings.

St. Joseph by the Sea 8, St. Peter’s 3: Matt Bowers and Nick Gonchar had three hits apiece for Sea (9-0). Liam Vogt gave up one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts in six innings. St. Peter’s is 3-7.

Xaverian 5, Archbishop Molloy 0: Blaise Scerbo gave up three hits in five shutout innings and Sal Taormina had an RBI for Xaverian (12-0). Gabe Hernandez had a leadoff triple in the first, scored and Brian Rosa pitched the final two innings to close it out. Molloy is 7-5.

Moore Catholic 4, Monsignor Farrell 3: Joe Todaro scored three runs and John Baggs gave up three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in six innings for Moore (9-1). Chris Wolf pitched a perfect seventh inning for the save. Mike Viegas had three hits for Farrell (4-6).

Xavier 11, Cardinal Hayes 5: Nick DiLeo had three hits and two RBIs and Anthony Auletta was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for Xavier (6-7). Hayes is 2-10.

Salesian 8, Mount St. Michael 1: Andrew Clark and John Napilatano each had two RBIs apiece for Salesian (2-10). Clark and Jake Morales both doubled. Mount is 1-10.

Holy Cross 3, Bishop Ford 1: David Giacomino tossed a complete-game, four-hitter with three strikeouts and Julian Bilodeau went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead Holy Cross (7-5). Nick LaForgia and Austin Nieves both went 1-for-2 with a run scored apiece. Ford is 7-6.
