Rivera’s royal pain, Yanks’ worst nightmare

The Issue: Yankee relief pitcher Mariano Rivera’s injury while warming up to play the Kansas City Royals.

Mariano Rivera has been a consummate professional who is looked up to by every person who plays, covers and follows baseball (“No Mo on the Mound?” Editorial, May 5).

Why is it that Rivera is getting a pass from the press? No one has criticized him for running down flyballs during batting practice.

And how about the coaching staff? Did anyone think to call them out on this one? The only warning that supposedly was given to him by one of the coaches was not to dive for flyballs. What were they thinking?

Just because “he’s always done it” doesn’t make it a smart idea.

I hope this is just a breather for Mo. Maybe today’s doctors can heal him as fast as his 90-mph pitch.

Relief pitchers only throw around 20 pitches a game when needed; this is why Rivera is in his 40s with an arm that is not worn out.

Guys like Mo, the Babe, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle will never be forgotten.

No one, not even a Met fan, wants to see a great athlete injured — least of all the superb Rivera.

However, if it was destiny that he be hurt, he couldn’t have picked a better night for it to happen. It sure took the heat off the Knicks’ loss.

Why was Rivera shagging flyballs in the first place?

If the injury is career-ending, it’s sad to see a first-ballot Hall of Fame candidate leave the game this way.
