BASEBALL
Mike Camerada, Monsignor Farrell
With Farrell down to its last out, Camerada lined an RBI double into right field to tie the game in the eighth against St. Joseph by the Sea on Friday night. The Lions would go on to win, handing the Vikings their first loss of the league season.
Rosario DiLorenzo, Archbishop Molloy
The right-hander followed up a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts against St. Edmund Prep on Monday with an excellent performance Saturday. DiLorenzo gave up no runs on three hits with four strikeouts in a 1-0 gem against St. Francis Prep in a crucial game.Dylan Lawrence, St. Francis Prep
Dylan Lawrence, St. Francis Prep
Not a bad outing for a sophomore. Lawrence, who almost didn’t even play varsity this season, tossed a complete-game two-hitter to hand Xaverian its first league loss of the season, a 1-0 victory Friday to all but lock up second place for St. Francis Prep.
Alexis Torres, George Washington
The power-hitting outfielder had the big blow in Friday’s 10-3 rout of Norman Thomas, a two-run hom erun that landed on the pitcher’s mound of the next field at Inwood Park. He also scored two runs in the win and in a 12-2 win over Luperon had two hits and three RBIs.
Matt Zalon, James Madison
His biggest contribution came on the mound, when he delivered five shutout innings of one-hit ball in a 1-0 win over New Utrecht. Zalon added two hits in the victory, and finished with a run scored and an RBI in a 10-1 whitewashing of EBC/Bushwick Leaders and two hits and three RBIs as Madison began the week blanking Midwood, 10-0.
SOFTBALL
Jackie Cautela, St. Joseph by the Sea
Cautela is in the midst of an all-city type of campaign. The junior excelled at the plate in Mudville, against some of the top teams Sea will face. She had a bases-clearing triple in the ninth to give the Vikings a win over Shaker and her RBI single in the seventh secured them a victory against Niagara Wheatley, collecting six hits in two games Sunday.
Allison Gasparino, Bishop Kearney
The senior center fielder came up big with the chance to claim the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Class A regular-season title on the line. Gasparino went 3-for-3 with a walk and scored four times in the Tigers 18-0 win over rival St. Edmund to earn the top seed in the upcoming playoffs.
Cheryl Lopez, Tottenville
It was her bat and not her right arm that was the key factor in a 5-3 win over McKee/Staten Island Tech on Wednesday. Lopez’s two-run single gave Tottenville the lead after the Pirates trailed 3-2 heading into the seventh inning.
Amy Pirozek, Construction
The sophomore has done a very nice job filling in for Alicia Gonzalez. Pirozek went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored in an impressive, 12-1 win over Bryant that clinched the PSAL Queens A-I division title for the third straight season.
Tiffany Rondon, Preston
Rondon has thought about beating rival Preston since she was a starter as a freshman. She finally accomplished it as a senior. She allowed just three hits, struck out two, walked four and went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, including an RBI triple during a three-run first inning of an eventual 4-1 win.
LACROSSE
Sam Avis, Staten Island Academy
Avis scored five goals and dished out an assist in the Tigers’ convincing 12-6 win over AAIS rival Chapin. The win clinched the SIA the AAIS regular-season crown and earned them a berth in the upcoming NYSAISAA tournament, after missing it a year ago.
Mike Cambria, Monsignor Farrell
The Lions midfielder had one of the biggest goals of the season for the Lions, who clinched the NYCHSAA Class A regular season title. Cambria scored with 37 seconds left for his second goal of the game to give Farrell a 7-6 win over St. Mary’s.
Grady Smith, Fieldston
The senior midfielder had seen enough after a slow start. Smith rushed a restart downfield and fed Dan Pruzen for a goal that pulled the Eagles within two goals at the half. He tallied two goals and four assists and his team exploded for a 10-6 win over Riverdale to secure second place in the Ivy League.
