Beyond The Black Rainbow

His late father directed “Rambo: First Blood,’’ but Panos Cosmatos’ debut feature couldn’t be more different — this would-be cult classic is the movie equivalent of gazing at a lava lamp for nearly two hours.

The use of controlled substances may be required to fully appreciate this trippy sci-fi meditation, which focuses on what the Tribeca Film Festival catalog described as “the strange and oppressive emotional landscape of the year 1983.’’

Michael Rogers plays a psychiatrist/New Age guru conducting experiments on a young woman (Eva Allan) who is apparently his captive. The story line doesn’t make any more sense than the title, though fans of the synthesizer scores, and singularly ugly hairstyles and fashions of the period may find much to enjoy here.
