Subway crime at highest level in 7 years

Subway crime is at its highest level in seven years, according to new statistics from the NYPD.

An average of 7.3 major felonies occurred every day in the first quarter of 2012, a disturbing figure that includes three rapes and 518 grand larcenies.

Last year’s average daily rate of major felonies — which includes robberies, assaults and grand larcenies — was 6.18, stats show.

In 2005, the amount of felonies per day was 9.24.

Much of the spike in crime was the result of tech-hungry thieves filching gadgets like iPads and smartphones, said NYPD Chief of Transit Joseph Fox.

“The increase is absolutely driven by the increased attention to electronics,” he said yesterday at the MTA’s transit committee meeting.
