Bell shows Jets he was safe choice in free agency

Yeremiah Bell has been a Jet for less than a week, but the safety already looks like he’s fitting in.

Bell worked with Eric Smith as the starting safeties during yesterday’s organized team activity and seems to be picking up the defense quickly.

“They told me I’d be a good fit for the defense,” said Bell, who spent eight seasons with the Dolphins. “This defense has a lot of great players on it. … I’m still learning but I’ve got a lot of guys helping me.”

LaRon Landry, the other safety the Jets signed this offseason, has not participated in OTAs, which are voluntary. Jets coach Rex Ryan said he hopes Landry is ready to go when training camp arrives in July. Landry is recovering from a foot injury.

Ryan also would not rule out re-signing Jim Leonhard, who is a free agent after three seasons with the Jets. Leonhard is recovering from knee surgery. Still, it seems unlikely the Jets would add another veteran safety with three on the roster already.

* Special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff had surgery on his leg last week and is not expected back on the Jets sideline until training camp.

Westhoff, who has battled bone cancer, needed to have a titanium rod in his left leg repaired after it broke while visiting his son in Indiana. Westhoff is recovering in New Jersey.

* Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was at Jets practice the last two days. Meyer and some of his staff were guests of the Jets. Typically, college coaching staffs visit every year at this time.

Meyer coached Tim Tebow at Florida, and they went to dinner Wednesday night along with a few other coaches who were with the Gators when Tebow was there from 2006-09.

* Besides Landry, receiver Santonio Holmes and cornerback Antonio Cromartie were also absent yesterday. A team spokesman said Holmes is on a trip to Germany visiting U.S. troops with other NFL players and Cromartie left early to spend Memorial Day weekend with his family.

* LB David Harris (calf strain), LB Bryan Thomas (Achilles surgery) and G Matt Slauson (shoulder surgery) were all held out of team drills.

* Free agent LB Rocky McIntosh visited the Jets yesterday but no signing is imminent, a source said.
