Grieving dog stays with dead mate for 14 hours by Phoenix roadside

PHOENIX — A picture of two pit bulls posted on Facebook caused a stir after it emerged that one of the animals lay dead for more than 14 hours on the side of a Phoenix road.

The female pit bull was hit by a car Friday night and collapsed to the ground at the side of the road, myFOXphoenix.com said.

The male dog, which refused to leave her side, continuously nuzzled the other animal’s body and lay by her side for nearly 15 hours until authorities finally came to remove her.

Facebook users shared the image more than 200 times, with one furious the animals were left for so long.

Karyn Aspan said, “I was so outraged I even called the mayor’s office and had posted on Facebook in hopes that the mayor’s office would be bombarded with calls.”

Animal Care and Control said it believed the dog had an owner because it had a harness.

Rodrigo Silva said, “We picked up this other dog and took him to our East Valley shelter, where he will stay until May 23. Right now, it doesn’t look like he has any behavioral or health problems.”

The male pit bull will be put up for adoption in 72 hours if he does not show any health or behavioral problems.
