ORLANDO, Fla. — Casey Anthony, the reviled mom who was acquitted of murdering her two-year-old daughter, is back in the public eye — but not by her choice.
After 10 months of searching, investigators found Anthony at a residence in Florida and served her with a subpoena in a defamation lawsuit. The action could force her to face questions in a courtroom, under oath, about the death of her daughter, Caylee.
A woman named Zenaida Gonzalez filed the suit after Anthony told authorities a babysitter named Zenaida Gonzalez kidnapped Caylee. Gonzalez is claiming defamation because she has the same name as the babysitter, who Anthony invented in 2008.
“Ms. Gonzalez is happy to hear that Casey Anthony finally will be held accountable just like everybody else,” Gonzalez’s attorney Matt Morgan told People magazine.
Since her highly publicized acquittal last July, Anthony has been in hiding. Her only public appearance has been on the internet — a YouTube video she used to express her feelings about life after the trial and how “surreal” things had been. She did not take the stand on her own behalf in the murder trial.
A judge allowed Gonzalez’s suit to proceed and ordered Anthony’s lawyers to reveal her whereabouts. They took the subpoena on her behalf after she avoided the investigators staking out her house.
Anthony filmed a deposition for the suit from an undisclosed location in October, wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses and what looked like a long, black wig. She invoked the Fifth Amendment for much of her testimony.
Before the subpoena, Anthony planned to leave the country in September, after she had finished her probation for a check fraud charge.
Now, Anthony must go back to Orlando to confront Gonzalez, who wants her to face unanswered questions about Caylee’s murder.
The trial will start Jan. 2.
