PSAL Class B baseball playoff roundup: Rodriguez pitches Health Professions to upset of QHST

Marc Rodriguez tossed a complete-game, no hitter to lift No. 21 Health Professions to a 3-1 upset of 12th-seeded Queens HS of Teaching in the first round of the PSAL Class B playoffs on Friday.

Edward Alcantara homered and scored two runs and Bryan Aguilera scored a run for Health Professions (12-4), which takes on No. 5 Washington Irving in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. QHST ends the year at 13-4.

No. 1 South Bronx 8, No. 32 Seward Park 0: The Phoenix (17-0) will host No. 17 Smith in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Seward Park ends the year at 9-5.

No. 2 Grady 10, No. 31 All City Leadership 2: James Smith had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two, John Serrano also had three hits and two RBIs, Anthony Mella scored two runs and Smith struck out 11 in 4-2/3 for Grady (17-0), which faces the winner of No. 15 Transit Tech/No. 18 Juan Morel Campos in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. All City Leadership finishes 9-8.

No. 3 Queens Vocational Tech 11, No. 30 Beach Channel 1: Queens Voc (16-1) meets No. 19 Truman in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Beach Channel finishes 9-8.

No. 5 Washington Irving 3, No. 28 LaGuardia 1: Melvin Ali fanned seven in four innings of two-hit ball, Miguel Rivera Sanchez tossed there perfect innings and Ali and Mike Flores each had a hit and scored once for Irving (14-3), which takes on No. 21 Health Professions in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. LaGuardia completes its season at 9-8.

No. 7 Construction 11, No. 26 Prospect Heights 1: Construction (15-2) will meet the winner of No. 10 Randolph/No. 23 InTech in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Prospect Heights end the year at 11-6.

No. 8 Lab Museum 4, No. 25 WHEELS 3: Stephen Johnson drove in two runs, Daniel Hadad had two hits and scored a run and Jacob Bader went the distance, struck out eight and allowed four hits for Lab (13-2), which meets the No. 9 Bronx Science/No. 24 Thomas Jefferson winner in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Wheels ends its season at 10-5.

No. 17 Smith 4, No. 16 Banneker 2: Roger Ramirez had two RBIs, Glenn Matos struck out 11 in 6-1/3 and added two hits for Smith (12-5), which meets No. 1 South Bronx in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Banneker is 12-5.

No. 19 Truman 9, No. 14 Brooklyn Studio 1: Steven Custodia had three hits and five RBIs, Derick Almonte added three hits and two RBIs, Luis Esquina added four hits, scored four runs and drove in two runs and also struck out 12 on the mound in six innings for Truman (12-5), which faces No. 3 Queens Vocational Tech in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Brooklyn Studio ends its season at 14-3.

No. 22 Grover Cleveland 3, No. 11 Martin Van Buren 1: The Tigers (12-5) meet No. 27 MLK in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Van Buren ends up 13-4.

No. 27 Martin Luther King Jr. 1, No. 6 Erasmus Hall 0: Lizandro Cruz tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out five and Erik De Leon doubled in Alan Carino with the game’s lone run for MLK (10-3), which faces No. 22 Grover Cleveland in the second round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. E-Hall finishes 14-3.
