What an ash-hole!
A Staten Island woman is desperately searching for her sister’s remains after a coldhearted burglar snatched the urn.
Pamela Paul, 64, said she was away for Mother’s Day when a crook broke into her modest Fort Wadsworth home, stealing only some costume jewelry and the rosewood box containing her younger sibling’s ashes.
He likely mistook the elegant vessel for a jewelry box.
“This is almost like having her die a second time,” Paul said. “I don’t care who did it or why they did. I just want to get the ashes back.”
The sister, who lived in Manhattan, died in March following a long illness.
Paul ordered the beautiful box after the funeral director told her she’d otherwise have a plain container.
“I wanted something nicer,” she said.
Police say the thief used a drill bit to jimmy the door frame sometime between May 13 and 15.
Paul put up “Wanted” flyers near local bus stops showing the hand-painted box with little brass feet, one of which broke off as the thief stole away.
“I want to appeal to anyone who has some sort of conscious or heart to give it back,” she said.
Paul said she eventually planned to bury the ashes.
“She was my only sister. She wanted to be cremated. That was her wish.”
