WATCH: Fat cat livin’ large

He looks like the cat that ate the 1,000 canaries.

This tubby tabby named SpongeBob, who weighs a massive 30 pounds, was dropped off two months ago at a shelter in SoHo where he’s having trouble finding a new home because of his girth.

“I think people are intimidated,” said Kendra Mara (pictured), associate director of the Animal Haven shelter. “They think they’ll need more space for him, but really they don’t.”

SpongeBob arrived at the shelter after his owner had to go into a hospice.

Bob apparently got into his hefty condition by being allowed to eat freely all day. But he’s as sweet and playful as less portly pussycats.

SpongeBob weighed an even more corpulent 33 pounds when he arrived at the shelter, but has since been put on a diet.

“We eliminated dry food and put him on an exercise program,” Mara said. “Even if he just gets down to 24 or 25 pounds, that will make a huge difference on his body.”
