After all the hubbub, Osi Umenyiora will make $1.3 million more for the 2012 season on his recently restructured Giants contract, a deal his former agent advised him not to sign because it was a “substandard’’ offer.
As it turns out, Umenyiora agreed to what is essentially a one-year deal worth $6 million. Initial reports had the deal valued at $7.5 million; The Post reported Umenyiora’s deal at around $7 million.
Umenyiora’s base salary is now $2.5 million. He gets a signing bonus of $2 million, a $250,000 reporting bonus and $1.25 million in roster bonuses. Before the restructuring, Umenyiora was scheduled to make $3.975 million in base salary and another $700,000 in bonuses and easily attainable incentives to boost his earnings to $4.7 million.
The increased money is not close to what Umenyiora was seeking, and Tony Agnone — his agent for the past five years — strongly advised him not to accept the modest raise. The 30-year old defensive end dismissed Agnone, realizing he had little leverage and might as well take what he could get and remain with the Giants. Umenyiora said last week he will re-hire Agnone when he becomes a free agent and needs someone to represent him in contract negotiations.
The Giants added a voidable 2013 season at $1 million in salary to the new contract, but that will never kick in. Umenyiora will become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
