The best movie you never heard of stars John C. Reilly as John, a divorced clumsy guy, whose ex-wife (Catherine Keener) brings him to a party to meet new women. After cringe-worthy failures at pick-ups, he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei), who finds him awkwardly charming. A very sweet relationship develops, until her son Cyrus (Jonah Hill), who has an unsettling relationship with his mom, decides to cause trouble.

A Man and A

Woman, 1966

Forget an “An Affair to Remember” — this is the one to not forget. The mesmerizing Anouk Aimee is a widow who meets a widowed race car driver at their kids’ school. She falls for him but can’t let go of the memory of her late husband. Each of their stories unfolds with few words as the film delves into their private thoughts.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, 2011

Tues., 12:40 p.m., MOMAXe

Even die-hard purists of the original film can appreciate this story. A scientist (James Franco), looking for a cure of Alzheimer’s Disease, develops a drug that at first seems to work. Unfortunately, it works better on the lab apes — and one becomes so intelligent that he leads all the others in a rebellion against the inhumanity of man. Also starring John Lithgow and Freida Pinto (far left). Brilliant special effects.

My favorite book (by Michael Ondaatje) was made into a glorious movie. A group of archaeologists working before the outbreak of WWI include Count Almásy (Ralph Fiennes, below). He and the beautiful wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) of a colleague fall hopelessly in love as war breaks out. Their tragic story is recounted as the Count lies dying of massive burns in the remains of an Italian monastery under the care of a nurse (Juliette Binoche). The monastery eventually takes in a soldier, Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe) and a bomb-diffuser, Kip (Naveen Andrews). Winner of nine well-deserved Oscars.
