WATCH: ‘Distracted’ Metro-North engineer reading newspaper

The train’s moving – and the engineer’s reading the newspaper.

The video shows a distracted Metro-North train engineer engrossed by headlines, reading as the train barrels on, only looking up when signals sound.

The scene was captured Wednesday morning on a Grand Central-bound train.

The rider who captured the video, John Bingham of Yonkers, plans to file a complaint with Metro-North.

The agency said in a statement today, “Reading anything, texting or using cell phones while operating a train is obviously not acceptable. Metro-North is taking action to ensure this does not happen again. Every member of every train crew is being reinstructed today that this behavior is unacceptable.

“The engineer was taken out of service this morning when he showed up for work pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The automatic train control signal system in place in Metro-North territory is designed to overcome human failure and bring the train to a stop if an engineer ignores a signal.”
