Former Jets, Giants WR Burress not receiving many offers

Free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress could be looking for more money than teams feel he is worth. The Jets gave him $3 million last year.

“He’s not worth what the Jets paid him,” one league source said.

Burress had a decent year for the Jets (45 catches, 612 yards, 8 TDs), but never really found a rhythm with quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Teams see Burress’ age (35 in August), production and character issues and believe he is not worth what he is looking for. If Burress starts looking at a deal like the Dolphins gave Chad Ochocinco, he might get some bites. He needs to take a minimum deal with incentives built in.

Burress made some noise this week in a radio interview with Charlotte-based WFNZ about how he is in great shape and would like to play for the Panthers.

The wide receiver wants to play this season for the Panthers because of the proximity to family.

He also wouldn’t mind catching passes from second-year quarterback Cam Newton.

“Not just [the location], but playing with Cam, who I think is one of the top five quarterbacks in all of football, and as long as I can remember Steve Smith has been one of my favorites,” Burress said. “I just think it’s a great situation.”

In February, Burress expressed an interest in playing with the Eagles. He told WFNZ this week that teams are interested, but he has yet to find “the right fit.”
