Supporting America’s heroes

This morning, two days before America celebrates its independence, trustees of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund ring the NASDAQ opening bell to mark the start of a major effort in support of those helping to keep the nation free.

The fund — one of the charities run by the generous Fisher family, which also oversees the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum — today launches a $100 million campaign to build as many as nine rehabilitation centers for service personnel suffering from traumatic brain injury and PTSD.

The centers are dedicated to the research and rehabilitation of servicemen and women suffering from head injuries — which IEDs have made all too common among those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The centers will be built at military bases and medical institutions nationwide in order to provide care for service personnel while keeping them close to their units and family members during treatment.

Groundbreaking for the first two centers at Fort Belvoir, Va., and Camp Lejeune, N.C., occurred last month.

Give generously. The troops did.
