WATCH: Mickelson misses shooting 59 with stunning lip-out on final hole

Phil Mickelson missed making golfing history thanks to a cruel lip-out on his final hole of the opening round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open on Thursday.

Mickelson needed a birdie on the 9th hole, which was his last one of the day, but his 25-foot putt popped out of the hole after going in for an instant. Mickelson shot a 29 on his opening nine before birdieing three of the first four holes on the back nine. He would have been the sixth golfer in PGA history to break 60.

He finished with an 11-under 60 and currently has a four-stroke lead over four golfers.
