Upstate woman attacked by rabid bobcat

PUTNAM, NY — Authorities say a bobcat that pounced onto a 49-year-old woman at the door to her Adirondack home has tested positive for rabies.

Cindy Bowman tells The Post-Star of Glens Falls that the attack occurred last Thursday as she was letting her dog into her home in the Washington County town of Putnam, located between the northern end of Lake George and the Vermont border.

Bowman says the bobcat latched onto her face and bit or scratched her head, shoulder, arms and thigh. The bobcat then went after her daughter’s boyfriend, who shot and killed the animal.

The bobcat later tested positive for rabies. Bowman and the boyfriend are undergoing a series of shots for the disease.

State environmental conservation officials say bobcat attacks on humans are extremely rare.
