Drama Mama

Among the onslaught of fall shows are a few favorites who stand out by trying something more in their season premieres than simply returning:

“Hawaii Five-0” (Friday, 9 p.m., CBS)
The tropical cop show has been bumped to Fridays for its fourth season, but that won’t stop this crime solver from reliving its glory days. Guest star Chi McBride guest stars as SWAT Captain Lou Grover, a character that appeared in the original “Five-0.” Plus there’s another “Lost” alum for Daniel Dae Kin (Jin), to catch up with, as Henry Ian Cusick, (Desmond), terrorizes the island.

“Arrow: Year One” (Wednesday, 8 p.m., The CW)
This superhero and his abs don’t return for their second season until Oct. 9, but the series is trying its best to drum up some interest in this action-packed, fun series. The recap of Season 1 includes sneak peeks of new cast member/geek dream girl Summer Glau.

“Elementary” (Thursday, 10 p.m., CBS)
The second-season premiere of this Sherlock series was appropriately filmed in London, so at least we’ll get to see more than the detective’s dark apartment. And while Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu) are there to solve a case, he might as well reunite with his family, including estranged brother Mycroft, played by Rhys Ifans.

“Once Upon a Time: Journey to Neverland” (Sunday, 7 p.m., ABC)
If you’re still keeping track of where we are in fairytale land, after a season set in various enchanted worlds, we last saw most of the cast aboard the Jolly Roger sailing from Storybrooke to Neverland so they can rescue Henry (Jared S. Gilmore). And then there’s the spinoff coming in October, which will be set in Wonderland. The fantastical drama returns with a recap before launching into Season 3, which promises to give us Peter Pan, who in this series is the boy who never grew up but also the boy who never benefited from juvenile detention.

Oh baby: If you have a fairy tale lover who would suffer nightmares at the hands of “Once Upon a Time,” set the DVR for Sunday at 6 p.m. That’s when the Disney Channel travels to the kid-friendly version of Neverland as it premieres its much-advertised “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” primetime special that features the pirate series’ first appearance of Tinker Bell, who’s sort of shunned her “Peter Pan” roots since she went Hollywood with her fairy entourage.
