Keep flights cell-phone free: poll

Americans want to keep their airplane flights free of cell phones, a new poll found.

By nearly a two to one margin, 59 to 30 percent, they oppose the proposed relaxation of a federal ban on cell phone use in the skies, the Quinnipiac University national poll showed.

Even the most tech-oriented age group, those 18 to 29 years old, want to keep plane cabins free of cell phone chatter, by 52 percent to 39 percent, the poll released Wednesday found.

Last month the FCC said it was considering allowing phones to be used when an aircraft is above 10,000 feet.

The poll also found that 40 percent of Americans plan to spend less on gifts this holiday season. Another 7 percent said they would spend more than last year, while 52 percent said they would shell out the same amount.

Also, 14 percent said they planned to give less to charity this year but 17 percent said they would give more and 67 percent said they would donate about the same amount as in 2012.
