MLB: Buchholz accused of cheating

Clay Buchholz was accused by Blue Jays broadcaster Jack Morris of throwing a spitball during Wednesday’s win over Toronto. Another Blue Jays broadcast analyst, Dirk Hayhurst, said the Red Sox pitcher was “absolutely” cheating. A photograph showed Buchholz wiping his first two fingers across his forearm, which appeared to be partially covered with a white substance.

Umpire Tom Hallion and Rays pitchers David Price, Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore were fined for their dustup last weekend. … The Rockies agreed to a minor-league deal with three-time All-Star pitcher Roy Oswalt.

GOLF: McIlroy cards 67 at Charlotte

Rory McIlroy shot a 5-under 67 for a seven-way share of the first-round lead at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte. Phil Mickelson is in a group one shot back.

China’s Ye Wocheng at 12 years and 242 days, became the youngest golfer to play a European Tour event when he shot 7-over 79 in the opening round at the China Open. Robert Jan Derksen of the Netherlands topped all scorers with a 66.

Thai teen Ariya Jutanugarn shot a 7-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead over Cristie Kerr after the first round of the LPGA Tour’s Kingsmill Championship in Williamsburg, Va.

Greg Bisconti won the Westchester PGA Match Play Championship with a 1-up victory over Kyle Baehler at Saint Andrews. Nick Bedlow won the Long Island title with a 3-and-2 win over Mark Mielke at North Shore.

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors suspended rule changes passed in January that would have allowed unlimited electronic communication — including text messaging — from college coaches to football recruits. Text messaging has been banned in college football recruiting since 2007.
