Cable scores big in SAG nominations

Wednesday’s SAG Award nominations further underscored the disappearing line between broadcast and cable – and the emergence of streaming TV a la Netflix.

Several cable films and series, including “Behind the Candelabra,” “Top of the Lake,” “Homeland” and “Breaking Bad,” clocked in with multiple nominations for the awards, which will air live – on both TNT and TBS – at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. “House of Cards,” which will return to Netflix in February for its second season, also snared several nominations.

HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra,” which tells the story of the relationship between closeted homosexual Liberace and his much younger lover, Scott Thorson, earned nods for stars Matt Damon (Thorson) and Michael Douglas (Liberace) for Best Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries.

Also earning nods on the cable side were Holly Hunter and Elisabeth Moss, both for “Top of the Lake” (Sundance Channel); Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn, both for “Breaking Bad”; and Claire Danes (“Homeland”), who took home an Emmy this fall for her leading role as cray-cray CIA agent Carrie Mathison in the Showtime series.

Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), Jeff Daniels (“Newsroom”) and Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) were also nominated as Best Actors in a Drama.

Regarding TV movies and miniseries, Rob Lowe earned a nomination for his starring role in Nat Geo’s “Killing Kennedy” – alongside Al Pacino (HBO’s “Phil Spector”) and Jeremy Irons (“The Hollow Crown,” WNET) – while Helena Bonham Carter (BBC America’s “Burton and Taylor”), Angela Bassett (“Betty & Coretta,” Lifetime) and Helen Mirren (“Phil Spector”) all earned nods for Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries.

In the comedy category, volatile blowhard Alec Baldwin (“30 Rock,” NBC) was joined by Jason Bateman (“Arrested Development” on Netflix), Ty Burrell (“Modern Family,” ABC), Don Cheadle (“House of Lies,” Showtime) and Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory,” CBS).

Their nominated female comedy counterparts are Mayim Bialik (“The Big Bang Theory”), Julie Bowen (“Modern Family”), Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie,” Showtime), Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep,” HBO) – who, like Danes, snared back-to-back Emmys in 2012 and 2013.
