Engineers inspect NYC water tunnel for first time since 1917

A crucial stage of the Third Water Tunnel is being completed Wednesday– allowing engineers to inspect another water tunnel for the first time in almost 100 years

“We haven’t been in able to get in there since 1917,” said one city official of the city’s first water tunnel.

Mayor Bloomberg is announcing the landmark achievement by touring a portion of the 60-mile tunnel that is under Central Park.

The tunnel is one of the most complex public works projects ever undertaken. Although conceived in 1954, construction didn’t begin until 1969.

The first stage of the new tunnel is already serving northern Manhattan. On Wednesday all of Manhattan will be getting water through the tunnel.

Extensions to all other boroughs aren’t expected to be ready until 2020.

Earlier on Wednesday, the mayor was in The Bronx announcing completion of the Ferry Point golf course, a project begun under the Giuliani Administration 11 years ago.
