FOOTBALL: O’Brien gets pay bump

Penn State football coach Bill O’Brien is getting a $1 million pay raise after a successful debut season.

O’Brien’s deal when he arrived in January 2012 called for a base salary of $950,000. That is going up to $1.9 million starting July 1, according to contract terms released yesterday by the school.

Sophie Perkins, whose cousin, Kasandra Perkins, was fatally shot Dec. 1 by Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher who then killed himself, has been given custody of the couple’s nine-month-old daughter.

GOLF: Hoffman leads Travelers

In Cromwell, Conn., Charley Hoffman missed the course record by a stroke, but shot a 61 to take the first-round lead at the Travelers Championship.

Hoffman is one stroke ahead of Hunter Mahan. Bubba Watson was two strokes back after shooting a 63. Newly crowned U.S. Open champ Justin Rose shot a 67.

In Munich, Ernie Els shot a 9-under 63 for a one-shot lead after the opening round of the BMW International Open.

An appearance in Shanghai by retired soccer star David Beckham, China’s newly minted soccer ambassador, touched off a stampede that resulted in five people being injured.
