Man killed after jumping onto subway tracks, grabbing third rail

A man killed himself in the West Village this afternoon when he jumped onto the tracks and grabbed the electrified third rail, police said.

The man, who appeared to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead in the Seventh Avenue South and Christopher Street station shortly after the 2:55 p.m. incident.

Service on the No. 1, 2 and 3 trains was interrupted for about 50 minutes while his body was removed from the tracks.

Police withheld his name until his family was notified.
