Lions pound sloppy Pats

Reggie Bush wasn’t a factor at all in the running game for the Lions last night in Detroit.

But he was more than OK as a receiver.

Bush, the multi-purpose back brought in to provide a spark for Detroit this season, ran for a single yard on six carries, but he had five catches for 103 yards in a 40-9 win over the Patriots.

New England’s first-team offense, which was precise and efficient in the first two games of the exhibition season, was anything but in preseason game No. 3.

Tight end Zach Sudfeld and running backs Brandon Bolden and Shane Vereen lost fumbles and Tom Brady threw an interception in four of New England’s first five possessions. The other possession was a three-and-out.

Tim Tebow did not play last night, meaning he could be in danger of getting cut.

Panthers 34, Ravens 27

Ted Ginn Jr. returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown, and the Panthers defense scored three times in a 34-27 preseason victory over the Ravens last night in Baltimore.

REDSKINS: Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III was fined $10,000 by the NFL for wearing unauthorized apparel, a T-shirt with ‘’Operation Patience’’ on it.

Griffin, recovering from a knee injury and yet to play in the preseason, wore the shirt on the field before Washington’s exhibition game Monday night against the Steelers.

BUCS: Guard Carl Nicks and kicker Lawrence Tynes a former Giants, are being treated for MRSA infections.

General manager Mark Dominik confirmed Nicks has an infected blister on the side of his left foot and Tynes has an infected toe on his right foot.

MRSA is a staph infection that is resistant to some antibiotics.

49ERS: San Francisco added another quarterback to the competition to be Colin Kaepernick’s backup, signing nine-year veteran Seneca Wallace to a one-year contract.

While Colt McCoy had appeared to be the favorite to win the No. 2 job, neither he nor Scott Tolzien has separated himself. Even rookie B.J. Daniels has been deemed a contender, though clearly Wallace now will get a chance with little time to prepare before the Sept. 8 season opener against the Packers.

TEXANS: Safety Ed Reed, on the physically unable to perform list since before training camp began, will have one final checkup after April hip surgery, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The Texans are attempting to have the five-time All-Pro ready in time for the Sept. 9 regular-season opener at San Diego.

NFL: Saying the NFL Players Association is “holding HGH testing hostage” after more than two years of squabbling with the league, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee warned Congress could get involved.
