A New York day in the life of Joe Lo Truglio

We recently caught up with Joe Lo Truglio, who plays Detective Charles Boyle on Fox’s new comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine. A native New Yorker, we asked him about his favorite Italian food and getting drunk while being “arty.”

Post Studios: So you grew up in New York City?

JLT: I was born in Queens and lived in Hell’s Kitchen for almost 15 years. I’m biased, but I think it’s the best neighborhood in Manhattan. I’m half Irish, so you get it.

Post Studios: When you have some free time, where do you head?

JLT: My favorite thing to do in the city, and yes it’s an easy answer, but it’s true, is to walk wherever- usually the Park – listening to music. I get to see what’s changed since last time I was there, and I get to people watch. I’ll hit the Great Lawn and wind down to the Met or Natural History. Yes it’s “arty” but you’ll feel better about yourself if you get drunk and act like a peasant later.

Post Studios: Favorite restaurants?

JLT: CAFE HABANA on Elizabeth. Great Cuban coffee and corn on the cob with the works.

JOHN’S OF 12th. Delicious stuffed shells, old school Italian atmosphere. I brought some family there who live in Alabama. They thought Tony Soprano might walk in at any moment. Totally blew them away.

DALTON’S on 9th Ave. One of my favorite Irish pubs to down what I call the “peanut-butter-and-jelly” of drink combos: Guinness and a Jameson’s. “Terrific Shepherd’s Pie, lots of TV’s for my Jets and Mets, and bartenders with great senses of humor, because they’re Irish. Now there’s better dives in the area, ones with deeper character and more colorful clientele, but I’m not telling. First off, they’re more fun if you find them yourselves, and more importantly, my friends would kill me if I gave its location. My apologies, NY Post.

LUGER’S in Brooklyn. I mean, come on. Where else? It’s the best steak. Old Homestead ain’t bad either, plus they got Garlic Bread Jenga, those blocks of deliciousness stacked on a pool of cheese sauce.

CORNER BISTRO on 8th Ave & 4th. Still the best burger in the city. Served on a paper plate. Well done fries. Late night heaven.

You can catch Joe and Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Tuesdays at 8:30/7:30c on FOX!
