Chinese protesters on rooftop near UN

A group of Chinese protesters have taken to the roof of a Midtown apartment building near the United Nations to air their grievances, authorities said.

Cops were called to the building on East 43rd Street sometime before 6 a.m. and are currently engaged in a dialogue with the group, which has banners and signs hanging from the side of the building in Chinese and English.

Police said it is unclear what group the protesters are affiliated with or what they are protesting, but one of the signs in English makes mention of the Sparrow Initiative — an organization opposed to unjust evictions and land-grabs by the Chinese government — and contains a tirade written by one woman who claims her country’s government illegally seized her company’s property.

Police said the situation is ongoing and they are working to get the peaceful protesters off the roof and back down to street level.
