Girardi-Showalter have heated altercation

BALTIMORE — The season’s almost over. Why can’t we all get along?

As the Yankees and Orioles battle for an AL wild-card spot, tempers flared after the first inning of Monday night’s game between the teams at Camden Yards when Orioles manager Buck Showalter had to be restrained from going after Yankees manager Joe Girardi.

According to a person sitting close to the screen behind home plate, Girardi said something to Bobby Dickerson as the Baltimore third-base coach headed for the home dugout after the bottom of the first. An irate Showalter, a former Yankees manager, reacted by coming out of the dugout and pointing at Girardi, who moved toward the area behind the plate.

As players from each dugout drifted onto the field, Showalter was restrained by plate umpire Ed Hickox while Yankees bench coach Tony Pena kept his eye on Showalter. Hickcox talked to Girardi and Jim Joyce, the first base umpire, chatted with Showalter, who remained animated and continued to point at the Yankees’ dugout.
