Mark Sanchez ready for second MRI

The Jets and quarterback Mark Sanchez are hoping to get a clearer picture this week of exactly what is wrong with Sanchez’s right shoulder and the best way to treat his injury.

Sanchez and coach Rex Ryan both confirmed Sanchez will seek a second opinion this week. A source said Sanchez will visit renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews to have his shoulder examined.

“I think in a situation like this, it’s prudent to get some outside opinions,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez injured the shoulder a little more than two weeks ago in a preseason game with the Giants. A source said Sanchez’s initial MRI exam results were tough to read because of the amount of swelling and bleeding inside the shoulder. The doctors were unable to provide an exact diagnosis and the plan all along was for him to be re-examined this week with the hope an MRI exam now will show a clearer picture.

A source said there is a fear Sanchez has a tear in his labrum, but no one is sure how bad it is. The worst-case scenario for Sanchez is the injury is bad enough to require surgery and his season would be over. The Jets believe it is not that serious, judging from how Sanchez’s rehab has gone so far.

Sanchez said he is not thinking about missing the season and hopes he’ll be back soon.

Sanchez would not say when he is going to visit Andrews, but will be at Thursday’s game against the Patriots.

It sounds as if the Jets won’t have wide receiver Jeremy Kerley this week. Kerley was drilled by Buccaneers safety Mark Barron in the second quarter on Sunday, a hit that drew an unnecessary roughness penalty. Kerley returned to the game in the second half, so it was thought the injury was not a concussion.

But a Jets spokesman said Kerley passed the concussion protocol during the game and again after the game. But Monday morning he complained about his head and when the trainers examined him again, he was held out of practice and the trainers labeled it as a concussion.

Sanchez on owner Woody Johnson saying he should have protected himself when he was injured: “I’ve talked to Woody plenty since then. It’s really a non-issue.”…

DE Muhammad Wilkerson was asked on WFAN on Monday if the Jets will be 2-0 next week and he said they will. It’s not exactly Joe Namath guaranteeing Super Bowl III, but it shows some confidence. … Patriots RB Shane Vereen reportedly has a broken bone in his wrist and will miss the game. … C Nick Mangold (elbow), WR Clyde Gates (knee) and DT Sheldon Richardson (shoulder) were new additions to the injury report. Both were limited in practice. CB Dee Milliner practiced fully, but is listed as having a hip injury. … The team re-signed QB Brady Quinn on Monday, as expected. The team waived LB Danny Lansanah and signed WR Rahsaan Vaughn to the practice squad.
