Jets Report Card: Offense earns a D

OFFENSE

The wide receivers had at least six drops and did not give rookie quarterback Geno Smith much help. Smith (15-of-35, 214 yards, 3 INTs) had a rough second half after playing a decent first half. Smith held the ball too long several times and was sacked four times. The running game was better than Week 1, going for 129 yards on 32 carries.

DEFENSE

This unit was one bad play away from coming close to pitching a shutout. The blown coverage early in the game allowed Tom Brady to connect with Aaron Dobson for the touchdown. Outside of that, it’s hard to find many issues with this group. Brady (19-of-39, 185 yards, 1 TD) looked human for once. The Jets held the Pats to 4-of-18 on third down (22 percent).

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Jets used no returner on some punts, which was an interesting approach. Punter Robert Malone had a few bad punts that cost the Jets field position. Nick Folk made a 37-yard field goal to go to 4-for-4 this season.

COACHING

Rex Ryan did a masterful job on the defensive side of the ball, but offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg had some struggles. Ryan devised a tremendous plan to stop Tom Brady and Co., and it almost resulted in a Jets upset. Mornhinweg did not give Smith enough easy throws in this one and got away from the run when it was working well.
