FRIENDLY-FIRE WIDOW & COP CHAT

The widow of slain NYPD officer Omar Edwards spoke for the first time last night to the officer who shot him in a friendly-fire tragedy, sources said.

Danielle Edwards and Officer Andrew Dunton spoke by phone and agreed to meet face to face in the future.

Dunton, who shot Omar Edwards on an East Harlem street after Edwards chased a suspect with his gun drawn, expressed condolences to the widow’s family, telling her, “We’re both grieving right now,” according to a source close to Dunton.

Mrs. Edwards told the cop, “We all know what happened that night and we understand it was an accident,” the source said.

Dunton 30, had a clean record and had never fired his weapon prior to the May 28 shooting.

He was with two other cops who ordered both Edwards and the thief to halt. When Edwards turned toward them with his gun out, Dunton shot him, the NYPD said.

Since then, Dunton has made overtures to the slain cop’s family, although he did not attend Edwards’ funeral, fearing it would create controversy.

But it was Mrs. Edwards who requested last night’s phone conversation, sources said.
