VAGUE? WE TOLD YOUSSOU

THE documentary “Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love” is a tribute to the Senegalese superstar singer Youssou N’Dour.

It follows him on a world tour, which takes him from Cairo to Dublin to Paris to New York’s Carnegie Hall.

It also touches on the controversy raised by his Grammy-winning album, “Egypt.” Seems some people don’t think songs should include religious verse.

As directed and written by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, the film works best when we see N’Dour onstage. He has a great set of pipes and is nothing if not charismatic.

But Vasarhelyi offers only generalities on the “Egypt” dispute and never really tells us about N’Dour the man — except that he loves his frail, dying grandmother, to whom the film is dedicated.

This might be enough for some viewers (N’Dour fans especially). Others will want to learn more about what makes N’Dour tick.

In French, Wolof, Arabic and English, with English subtitles. Running time: 102 minutes. Rated PG (mature themes). At the IFC Center and the Paris in Manhattan and BAM Rose Cinemas in Brooklyn.
